a mother with her four children

Fatmata Sillah is a resilient mother, raising four children in a small makeshift house where rain seeps through every corner. Despite their challenging living conditions, Fatmata and her children work together to support the family. They diligently scavenge the dustbins, collecting scrap metal, waste plastics, and old foam, which Fatmata cleans and transforms into pillows for sale. Her son plays a vital role too, gathering scrap iron that they sell at a metal shop after school, providing them with much-needed income to afford food for the night

Their daily activities are essential for the children’s education. However, there are times when they have to miss school for a week or even two consecutive weeks due to food shortages or demands from teachers and school administrators, despite the government’s Free Education policy. The uniforms they wear are worn for two academic years, and they have to make do with tattered rubber slippers as their school shoes.

Despite the hardships, Fatmata remains courageous and hopeful that one day a humanitarian organization will come to their aid, not just for her sake but to support her children’s education. She dreams of a brighter future where her children can continue their schooling and find better opportunities. Even in her darkest moments, she holds onto the hope that one day, her children’s education will be secure, and she can rejoice knowing they have a chance for a better life.
